Maine Ticket Institute Training for Employment Networks
June 2, 2010

The Maine Ticket Institute for Employment Networks was held on Wednesday, June 2, at the Augusta Civic Center in Augusta Maine. Click here to view the agenda, and click here for a flyer for the Institute.

Key features of the event:
Peter Mead, Susan Webb and Karen Davidson are experienced NENA trainers who have delivered similar Ticket Institute/EN training successfully in other states. Their training is based on key principles, including:
  • Before committing to the Ticket Program, service providers want reliable proof that they can develop a financially viable EN organization. ENs trust other experienced ENs who are "in the trenches" with them to answer this and other questions. Experienced and successful EN representatives will do the bulk of presenting at a Ticket Institute.
  • Program developers need one set of information to design and fund an EN organization, while operations people need a different set of information. Ticket Institutes will include sessions to serve both needs.
  • Peter Mead, CPDM (Certified Professional in Disability Management) has been active in disability management for 17 years, and is the owner of CareerConnect, an Employment Network in Eugene, Oregon.  He is a co-founder, past Chair and now Communications Director for the National Employment Network Association (NENA), which serves and advocates for Employment Networks (ENs) operating in the Ticket to Work and Self-Sufficiency Program of the Social Security Administration.  In addition to NENA’s communications, Mead is continuing to lead development of NENA’s “Ticket Institute,” which brings an important element of peer mentoring to EN training.  As a journalist and editor, Mead has developed publications and studies for: National Council on Disability, Disability Management Employer Coalition, Integrated Benefits Institute, OptumHealth Public Sector, and Work Injury Management News & Digest.

Susan Webb, MBA J,D., SPHR is director of employment services at Arizona Bridge to Independent Living’s (ABIL), where she previously served (1991 - 2000) as Executive Director. She has also worked as a national disability rights advocate, supporting the passage of the Ticket to Work and Work Incentives Improvement Act of 1999. Webb was one of 12 citizens appointed by the President and Congress to the Ticket to Work and Work Incentives Advisory Panel. In 2000, Susan vacated her post as Executive Director to focus specifically on employment services.  ABIL started its Employment Network operations as soon as the first tickets were mailed in February, 2002.  ABIL is one of the five most successful ENs in the country with over $1M in revenues from the program. Webb earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from Wayne State University, Detroit, Mich. She earned her Masters’ Degree in Business Administration from the University of Phoenix in 1987. She is also certified as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) by the Society of Human Resource Management. She completed her Juris Doctorate degree at Concord Law School in California in July, 2009.

Karen Davidson is the NENA Treasurer and chair of the NENA Membership Committee. Karen is the manager of "A Ticket to Success" a non-profit EN based in the Tulare County Office of Education in Visalia, California. Their EN has more than 700 Ticket assignments. Karen has trained more than 40 California ENs through a grant with a community foundation, and plans to train 10 more. Karen developed and hosts NENA's interactive online community site to facilitate ongoing dialogue and peer support for ENs and State VR agencies. Karen is a central figure in NENA's discussion with SSA staff about EN payment and other administrative concerns.
